Kingsbury Learning for Life Curriculum

“Learning for today, preparing for tomorrow”.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop knowledge and skills that lead to greater independence, successful transitions, and purposeful employment
  • Develop knowledge and skills that help pupils become active citizens that are visible in our local and wider community
  • Develop life-long communication systems so pupils can make positive connections with others and access and enjoy the wider world
  • Develop resilience and creativity so pupils can solve problems and take risks safely
  • Discover individual talents and celebrate all successes both big and small

We have three curriculum pathways to support the education of our broad-spectrum school: Explore, Aspire, and Inspire. Please click on the curriculum below for more information.

Promoting British Values at Kingsbury Academy

The DfE have identified a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

What British Values look like at Kingsbury Academy

At Kingsbury Academy, we are actively committed to promoting the fundamental British values.

Democracy

We listen to pupils’ and parent’s/carer’s voice. We are clear in showing that we want the young people to contribute and co-operate and consider the views and needs of others. Our curriculum policy ensures that through ‘Personalised teaching strategies’ pupils can develop their voice in order to have a real say in their school.

The Rule of Law

We consistently reinforce our high expectations of young people. Whenever appropriate learners are taught the value and reasons behind our expectations (rules) that they are there to protect and that everyone has responsibility. Our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach aims to improve quality of life and focuses on understanding the reason behind behaviour to prevent it. We pride ourselves on encouraging positive behaviour and using proactive rather reactive strategies.

Individual Liberty

Within our academy, everyone is actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we try and help our young people learn about how to make choices and what makes a good choice. Young people are encouraged to express their views and we respond to their preferences and interests throughout our teaching, by using ‘motivators and incentives’.

Mutual Respect

All staff demonstrate respect to everyone they come into contact with. They consistently promote the behaviours and attitudes that are the foundation of positive relationships. The strong school ethos encourages everyone to consider and support each other and to celebrate the worth and individuality of every member of the school community, alongside this we promote inclusion activities and facilitate opportunities to participate in their communities.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

A key theme in our teaching is understanding the world around us, and this includes providing experiences relating to different faiths, beliefs, and cultures. Members of staff have the duty to use every opportunity to share these values across any subjects or activities and to tackle issues as they emerge as well as planning for a good level of coverage of British values in our curriculum. Evidence for Learning software will record evidence of learning opportunities created by teachers and provided to our pupils. The recording of these will be uploaded termly. Much work was already in place to support and embed these values and it is our aim to ensure we effectively share this with pupils, staff, governors, and the wider community. The British values are integral to our academy vision and ethos
